This is a short, close in hike that starts at the southeast corner of the Saguaro
Coop RV Park. Many Saguaro Coop residents use this
hike for exercise and to walk their dogs. The trail is well used and
easy to follow. The round trip out to the first fence line and
back is 2.97 miles. There is a little up and down but
there is little serious elevation change. The biggest
elevation change is right at the beginning of the hike when you
walk up to the Benson city water tank.
After that, there is some up and down, but it is mostly
level. The well used trail twists and turns along the
ridges as it heads primarily west toward toward the Whetstone
mountains. As one is getting fairly close to the
first fence line, an ATV
trail enters from the north (the right) and hikers should
bear to the left and follow the ATV track. A little
further along the trail a second
ATV track heads off to the right and hikers should again
bear to the left and and continue heading west toward the
Whetstones on the ATV track. At the point of the second
ATV track junction, the barbed
wire fence is very close. Once at the fence, hikers
wishing to complete the out and back 2.97 mile hike should turn
around and return on the trail they just traveled. On the
return, hikers should bear to
the right at both
places where the ATV tracks angle off to the left.
There are no toilet facilities at the trailhead. The nearest public toilet facilities are in the clubhouse of the Saguaro Coop RV Park.
