Description of the Ramsey Canyon Hike
Hamburg Trail

This hike occurs primarily in the Ramsey Canyon Preserve.  The Preserve is owned and operated by the Nature Conservancy.  There is somewhat limited parking but it is usually not a problem on week days during the winter.  This hike begins in at the Visitor's Center for the Nature Conservancy and one must pass through the Visitor's Center to get to the trailhead.   There is a $6.00 entrance fee was charged for each person.  The Visitor's Center has a nice little shopping area for books and nature based items.

This is a short hike that can be best described in two parts.  The lower section of the hike is an interpretive trail with a couple of loops that follow the beautiful year around stream up the sycamore lined canyon from the Visitor's Center.  This lower section is a delight for "birders", especially in the spring and summer when the woods are full of many different species of hummingbirds.  But, even in the winter there are a number of Arizona and Mexican birds that can be a delight.  The lower section is about a half mile long and so if one is limited to the lower section one can get in a mile of walking with a modest altitude gain.  Every time I have walked up the trail I have had my binoculars with me and I spend more time searching the tree tops for birds than hiking.  Besides birds, there are frequently Coues Whitetailed Deersquirrels and maybe even a Coatimundi to be seen along the trail.  The upper loop of the lower trail circles around two frog ponds that have endangered Chiricahua Leopard Frogs that can be seen in the summer.

Toward the end of the lower section, the upper section of trail splits off to south and begins a steep accent.   The upper half mile of the hike (about a half mile one way) is quite steep and is responsible for most of the 1000 feet of altitude gain associated with this short hike.  There are good vistas from the top as well as access to other trails in the Huachucas.  The upper half mile hike is well marked with a trail sign.

There are excellent flush toilets at the Visitor's Center.

Dogs and bikes are not permitted in the Ramsey Canyon Preserve.
