Description of the Miller Canyon Along the Stream Trail in the Huachucas
This is a 1.5 mile trail that basically follows the stream upstream from a lower trailhead with pit toilets up to an upper trailhead and upper parking lot with no toilet facilities.  Some sections of the trail are rough.  The upper parking lot and trailhead also provides access to several other trails other than the trail that follows the stream.  I usually hike the Miller Canyon Trail by parking at the lower parking lot and hiking up to the upper parking lot and traillhead and then turning around and hiking back on the same trail to make it a 3 mile roundtrip.  At the lower parking lot the trailhead for the Miller Canyon Trail is not well marked.  Rather, a trail heads off across the grassland toward the mountains and the stream.  After a couple hundred yards one comes to the stream and trail crosses the stream and heads upstream on the south side of the stream.  After a half mile or so the trail crosses the stream again to the north side of the stream.  The Tombstone Water Pipe runs down the streambed and can be seen in several places as one hikes along.  As one hikes along the stream there are many views of the stream.  There was a big wild fire in the region in 2011 that scorched Miller Canyon and many of the surrounding areas.  In July 2012, a major rain event causes a major flashflood in Miller Canyon. Hikers will see much evidence of both events as one hikes along the stream.  One will also see how the vegetation is recovering so nicely.  Most of this hike is under a canopy of various evergreen oaks.  There are also a number of madrone trees with berries that provide a nice bird magnet in November and December.  In the fall of 2014 the stream was about 3 feet wide and ran the length of the hike.  Beyond the upper parking lot is a privately held acreage (apple orchard) and Guest Ranch.  Trails leaving from the upper parking area and trailheads climb up and around the private ground.

There are pit toilets at the lower trailhead but not at the upper parking lot and trailhead.

The lower parking lot and trailhead also serves as the trailhead for the Perimeter Trail that follows the contour over to the Carr Canyon Trailhead.
