This is a short, close to Benson hike that can easily
be done in about 2 hours. The hike is in the San Pedro
Riparian National Conservation Area and is managed by the
Bureau of Land Management. When I did the complete loop as
indicated on this website my gps unit indicated that the
hike was 4.23 miles. This is a little more than the
official markers indicate, but I did add the little loop up to
the cemetery. This is
one of the more interesting parts of the hike and should not
be avoided. There are some grave
markers but most of the graves are visible as mounds of rocks. I did
the hike in 1 hour and 40 minutes. The trail begins
within the fenced in Fairbank
Historic Townsite on the north side. The Trailhead is marked with a sign
and the trail is well marked with informational signs
and trail marking signs. The trail is quite flat except for
the little climb up to the cemetery. The trail is mostly
sand and dirt with a minimum of rocks. So, the footing
is generally pretty good. Much of this trail is wanders
through mesquite woods and open grassy meadows. It is
not especially scenic but it does provide good exercise.
The townsite, cemetery, Grand Mill ruins and the San Pedro River overlooks
are the interesting things to see. Due to the water in
the San Pedro there can be some good birding in the
area. When I visited in November 2015 there were two
Coues Whitetailed Deer in the picnic area.
There are pit toilets
at the parking area.
The parking area close to the trailhead is very small the
extended parking area close the AZ 82 is quite large.
The old
school house in Fairbank Historic Townsite also serves
as a gift shop. However, when I visited on a weekday in
November nothing was open.
