The Echo Canyon Loop is a 3.3 mile that meanders down a ridge through spectacular rock formations. It seems that every turn in the trail opens up a new vista more beautiful than the last. One section of the trail passes through the "Echo Canyon". This trail is in a National Monument and it is well maintained and there is appropriate signage. The trail is mostly easy and fairly wide but there are areas where the trail is rocky and steep. The "lunch site" is just about the midpoint of the hike and requires continuing down the ridgeline 100 yards or so when the trail turns back for the return part of the loop. The lunch site has good rocks for sitting and offers spectacular views out to the valley beyond. Far to the west in the distance you can see the Dragoons.
The hike down the ridgeline to the lunch site is mostly downhill. So, the return from the lunch site back to the parking area is the uphill part. The return hike tends to follow along a south facing slope. The first half or so of the hike is fairly level with perhaps a slght uphill tendency. The second half of the return hike has most of the uphill climb to the parking area.
The toilet facilities adjacent to the Visitor's Center are modern, flush type toilets. Well maintained pit toilets are available at the parking area for the Echo Canyon Loop Hike.
The Echo Canyon Loop Trail is in the Chiricahua National Monument and visitors must pay a fee to enter and to park. However, one's National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass (Senior Pass) will offer free entry and parking.
The Visitor's Center offers interesting interpretive displays and some nice shopping opportunities related to the Monument.
There are some excellent birding opportunities in the National Monuments including the chance to see an Elegant Trogun. The Visitor's Center has information vis a vis rare bird sightings.
