This is not really a hike in the same sense as most of
the others on this website, but it is a very interesting place
to visit. Once there, one can roam around the area and
enjoy the views and the pre-history present in the
rocks. There is one
interpretive sign at the Council Rocks that was placed
there by the Forest Service. This sign tells a bit of
history associated with this site. Otherwise there
are no other markers or signs that will direct you to this
site. To get to the trailhead
it is best to drive
north on Forest Service road 687 from Middlemarch Road.
The side road that you need to turn onto to get to the
trailhead is Forest Service road 687K (note the signs on
both side of the side road).
There are no toilets or any other facilities at this
site. The nearest facilities are probably in Tombstone
about16 miles southwest.
North and just a little east of the Pictograph Rocks with the
Interpretive sign is private property as
indicated on the Forest Service Map of this area.
This private property has a main compound and
what appears to be ruins to the west of the compound.
There is also another very interesting
looking rock formation just to west of the
compound. This whole general area is the area associated
with the Whitehouse Ruins. The Whitehouse Ruins are what
is left of a 19th century ranch.
Also note that on the Forest Service map, the location
of the marked "Council Rocks" is to the east and north
of where the interpretive
sign and pictographs
are located. The Forest Service map places the "Council
Rocks" at a GPS location of N 31o 54.56160' and W
110o 01.98960' closer to the private property and
the compound.
